The Simple Understanding of T-shirt Fabrics

Can’t decide between a budget-friendly or premium t-shirt? We’ve got you covered. Let’s break down the differences.

Cotton Types

  • Carded/Standard Cotton: Think of this as regular cotton. It’s softer than rough cotton (ex: cotton tote bag) but not as soft as other types. It’s often used for budget-friendly shirts.
  • Ring-Spun Cotton: This is like upgraded cotton. It’s softer, smoother, and stronger because the fibers are twisted tighter. It feels nicer on your skin and lasts longer.

Cotton Blends

  • Cotton Polyester Blend: This shirt is a mix of cotton and polyester. It’s often wrinkle-resistant, dries faster, and is less likely to shrink than 100% cotton, but it might not be as soft.
  • Tri-Blend: This is a mix of three fabrics, usually cotton, polyester, and rayon. It’s super soft, stretchy, and drapes nicely.

Cotton Thickness

  • 25s vs 30s Singles: This refers to the thickness of the cotton thread. A higher number (like 30s) means a finer, softer thread.

In a nutshell:

  • Carded cotton: basic, affordable
  • Ring-spun cotton: softer, stronger, higher quality
  • 25s vs 30s: higher number means finer, softer thread
  • Cotton polyester blend: mix of comfort and durability
  • Tri-blend: super soft and stretchy

Conclusion:

The type of shirt you choose depends on your goals. If you’re starting a clothing line or making school spiritwear, a higher-quality ringspun cotton or tri-blend tee is often the best choice. These shirts are softer, more durable, and hold prints better. On the other hand, if you’re running a fundraiser or outfitting employees, a budget-friendly carded cotton tee might be more suitable.

All three types of shirts have their place. While ringspun or blend tees tend to be smaller in size, they’re generally more comfortable and long-lasting. Carded cotton tees offer affordability but might be less soft and durable. Ultimately, the best shirt for you depends on your priorities: comfort, durability, cost, or fit.

Remember, a shirt is often a walking advertisement for your brand, so the goal is to create the perfect custom look for your apparel, printed on comfortable, high-quality shirts that are worn, not stored.
